FAQ
XCollar & NeXsplint

What is the difference between a “Cervical Splint” and a regular c-collar?

  • XCollar is a Cervical Splint.  It works as a complete cervical immobilization system.  As an effective splint it isolates the injury by securing the patient above C-1 and below C-7.  It custom fits to any patient size (pediatric to adult) as well as in a multitude of positions to accommodate the patient’s position of comfort.  On the other hand, a conventional c-collar is commonly known just as a reminder to the patient not to move.

What is the difference between the XCollar and the NeXsplint?

  • The main difference between the XCollar and the NeXsplint is that the NeXsplint is designed to store more compactly.  This feature allows the NeXsplint to be stored in a space 40% smaller than the XCollar and conventional c-collars.  The NeXsplint is packed in a heavy duty, vacuum sealed, polyethylene bag to protect the device in extreme conditions.  This is optimum for vehicle extrication, tactical medicine, confined space, over the side, mountain, and urban rescue.

What colors are available for the XCollar and NeXsplint?

  • Both devices are available in clear see-through material, bright orange, and military green.

Does the XCollar/NeXsplint replace the need for a pediatric-sized collar?

  • Yes.  The XCollar and NeXsplint have been tested on pediatric patients weighing approximately 28lbs (12.7kg).  Thanks to the bilateral adjustability rescuers are capable of immobilizing the patient’s head in the proper neutral position regardless of the patient’s size.  The XCollar and NeXsplint have been tested on adults up to approximately 350lbs (160kg).  This completely eliminates the need for rescuers to carry multiple sizes of collars.

How will EmeGear support my agency during adoption of this new technology?

  • EmeGear is staffed with knowledgeable EMS professionals that will support your agency with our free training program.  We encourage agencies to call us or email us with any questions they may have to ensure a positive experience during the adoption process.  We offer professional trainers to provide live training and demonstrations upon request.

How long does it take to learn the application of the device?

  • On average it takes about 15 minutes of instruction and practice to learn the proper use of this system.  After several practice applications, any rescuer should be able to apply the XCollar/NeXsplint Cervical Splint in 30-60 seconds.

How do I address airway issues when a patient is wearing the XCollar?

  • Airway management features are built into the innovative design of the XCollar/NeXsplint.  These features allow for total access to the patient’s trachea and help the paramedic to obtain a secure airway. Intubation can be performed by loosening the XCollar straps, and once airway has been obtained the device can be retightened to complete a secure airway. Training

Is XCollar compatible with other medical devices?

  • Yes.  The innovative design of the XCollar allows for compatibility with all devices commonly used in Emergency Medicine including: intubation tubes, tube holders, ventilation masks, Oral/Pharyngeal tubes, nasal canulas, head restraints, scoop boards, back boards, and KEDs.  It is also XRay, MRI, and CAT scan translucent.

How does XCollar/NeXsplint hold up in extreme climates?

  • Both devices have been tested in temperatures from -40C (-40F) to +60C (140F).
